A short drive from Palermo lies the charming village of Scopello Zingaro. It is part of the municipality of Castellammare del Golfo, and lies on the edge of the Zingaro Nature Reserve.

According to legend, Antiquity's famous author, Homer, used Scopello as inspiration for one of his locations in the adventures of Ulysses. He sends his hero to an island in the bay of Scopello during the final stage of Ulysses' long sea voyage. Scopello is a lovely seaside village, full of old-fashioned charm. It's well worth a visit, even if just to sit at the Piazza Nettuno in the center of the village and watch the world go by from one of the small outdoor cafes.

This stretch of coast is also a favourite with divers: several dive sites lie along Cala Rossa, Punta Pispisa and Cala Bianca. The cove at Cala Mazzo di Scialla is very small, but interesting for its rock formations and clear, turqoise waters that are quite shallow. If you enjoy nature and hiking, the Nature Reserve of Zingaro is ideal. It takes about 40 minutes to drive to Scopello from Palermo.

Some 40 km distance from Scopello lies Trapani, along a coastline that is particularly memorable for its high stacks and rocks that rise out of the sea, followed by lovely coves with sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. The salt marshes and pans of the Trapani and Paceco Saline Natural Reserve are an important wildlife habitat for many species, especially sea-fowl. Here sea salt has been harvested for centuries, in much the same way as it is today. Stretching for some 1,000 ha, the salt marshes have been a nature reserve since 1995, and are under the direction of the WWF. It's picturesque mills stand out as some of the very few man-made items in a landscape dominated by the sea.
