About a 39 minute drive from Palermo lies the hamlet of Solanto, taking the SS113 route towards Bagheria. Located in the Santa Flavia municipality, Solanto is a typical example of traditional fishing villages, where tuna fishing was the main source of income. Santa Flavia is home to the lovely Castello di Solanto, one of Sicily's stately homes that is still occupied today. It's perched directly above the sea and was built during Norman occupation of Sicily. In the past it was home to aristocratic families like the Filangeris and Alliatas and even provided a holiday retreat for the King of Sicily and his family on occasion. Around 1870, the castle passed into the family of the current owners, the Princes Vanii di San Vincenzo.

Today, the castle gardens are often used for special occasions in summer, and in winter the nearby Regia Tonnara, an old tuna-fishing building made from solid sandstone is used to house receptions and special events. The vaulted structure dates back to the late 17th century, when blue-fin tuna were caught in a traditional and rather complicated arrangements of nets called a tonnara. Not far from Santa Flavia lies the small fishing village of Porticello, along the SP113 route. It makes for a great stop-over for lunch, as the catch of the day is usually served up in the village restaurants. Porticello is perhaps even closer to the fascinating archaeological site of Hellenistic Solunto than Santa Flavia, which has a train station and is about 1.2 km distance from the excavated site. What has been preserved dates mostly back to the 4th century BC, but Solunto was built over an earlier Phoenician settlement and is one of Sicily's oldest known occupied sites.

Occupying an area spanning several hectares, the ancient city of Solunto lies at the foot of Mount Catalfano. Its streets are arranged in a chessboard pattern, and the remains of terracotta tiling are still preserved in several places, particularly in the main street. Several buildings, including a villa (The House of Leda), a gymnasium and other residential homes have been excavated and are open to the public. Their wall paintings and mosaic floors tell of the riches that flowed into the city via its port. There was even a theater in Solunto, of which parts of the stands and stage survive.
