About one hour and 11 minutes' drive from Palermo, taking the E90 motorway, lies the largest city within the gulf, aptly named Castellammare del Golfo. It's located roughly 77 km distance from Palermo, and justly famous for its beautiful setting and impressive Arab-Norman castle.

Set against the backdrop of Monte Inici, Castellammare is a beach town, with its own 1-km long sandy beach and turquoise waters perfect for family holidays. If you like mountain biking and hiking, a trip to the peak of Mount Inici may be just right for you. Rising 1,064 meters above sea level, Monte Inici dominates the landscape of this gulf, affording visitors who brave its peak unforgettable views across the Tyrrhenian Sea coast.

Castellammare's impressive castle dates back to the Arab occupation of the area in the 9th century. The fortress sits on a headland, and was enlarged by Norman and later Hofenstaufen kings. It was the most important fortress built for the protection of western Sicily, surrounded by the sea and separated from the town by a drawbridge during the Middle Ages. It was a formidable monument to protect the coast from pirate attacks and invasion.

Today the castle houses museums with several collections. The Tonnara displays finds from underwater archaeology, the Annalisa Buccellato Museum on the other hand shows ethno-anthropological finds that date from various periods of human occupation of the area. The Museum of Maritime Activities, also housed inside the castle complex, deals with the various ways in which Sicilians made a living from the sea, for example items used for tuna fishing and sailing.

Also noteworthy are several churches within the town, for example the Baroque Church of St Anthony of Padua, which stands outside the ancient fortifications, or the Chiesetta Santa Maria del Rosario in Via Marinella, very near the castle. Already mentioned in 1423, the church is sandwiched between buildings that date back to the Norman period of town expansion (ca. 1100 AD). The small church is noteworthy for its black Madonna and Child statue.

Palazzo Cruciferi, built in 1659 as a convent for the Crociferi Fathers, is today often used for cultural events, such as theatre or cinema performances. The palace and convent's founding fathers are called "Crociferi" because their robes show a large red cross.

If you like eating out Sicilian style, namely "Al fresco", you will like Castellammare. There are numerous restaurants serving Italian and typically Sicilian food. Try Piazza Petrolo or Piazza Europa for some of the restaurants, or head to Contrada Belvedere for fabulous views across the gulf and great Sicilian food. Via Discesa Marina is a good place to go if you just want a drink and soak up the atmosphere.
