The Sicilian Appenines are an ideal place to go, if you love nature and hiking, trekking or climbing. Sicily's Nebrodi area covers the Messina, Catania and Enna provinces, and is nearly all national park. Il Parco dei Nebrodi covers an area of more than 87,000 hectares, making it Sicily's largest protected nature reserve. Its territory includes around 23 villages too. The park is a haven for rare bird species, endemic animals and plants.

Nebrodi's highest peak is Mount Soro with more than 1,815 meters above sea level. If you make it up to the summit and can catch your breath, you can enjoy stunning views across to Mount Etna, Sicily's active volcano, and the Aeolian Islands that lie behind to the north.

It's a birdwatcher's paradise, with more than 150 species of birds that include Golden Eagles, the rare griffin and hawks, but there are also "fun" animals like herds of wild and tame black pigs and Sanfratellani horses. At higher altitudes chestnut and oak trees cover the slopes, which is why herds of pigs love to roam there in autumn.

Hiking and trekking in the park is very popular. The Dorsale dei Nebrodis trail stretches for some 70 kilometers, running from east to west through the park, and taking in villages like Mistretta and Floresta en route. The Il Sentiero dello Sorgenti trail runs along the southern side of the park, passing through the town of Maniace.

And if you are going to Nebrodi with your kids, there are several adventure parks, where everyone can have fun and let off some steam.

It takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes to reach Floreste at the south-eastern edge of the Nebrodi National Park, taking the E90, A20 and again E90 motorway along the coast. Leaving Palermo, the route takes you through lovely Bagheria, Cefalù, Santo Stefano di Camastea, Sant'Agata di Milietto and Capo d'Orlando.
